I discovered Joshua Redman’s version of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean” today on Spotify. I thought this was a great choice as I’ve never heard another jazz group perform this tune, and because of its popularity with the general public, it’s a good song to draw people in, especially non-jazz fans. I love this version. It caught my ear because I happen to be a fan of Led Zeppelin as well as Joshua Redman.
The track is from Joshua Redman: Trios Live (2014). This isn’t your typical jazz trio. The group consists of bass, drums and and sax. This trio format has been utilized by jazz artists before, but it’s still rather unusual to perform without a keyboardist or other chordal instrument.
